Lutein: The Natural Nutrient for Eye Health

What is Lutein?
Introduction to Lutein
Lutein is a carotenoid that is mainly found in the macula and retina of the human eye. It is similar to beta-carotene and vitamin A and is known as the "vitamin for the eyes." It is primarily used to prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, and retinitis pigmentosa. In addition, lutein helps prevent diseases such as colorectal cancer, breast cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
More than 600 types of lutein have been discovered, but only 30 to 50 are found in common foods, such as broccoli, spinach, kale, corn, bell peppers, kiwi fruit, grapes, orange juice, zucchini and pumpkin.
Lutein's mechanism of action
In daily life, the eyes adjust themselves when exposed to light, but blue light penetrates directly into the retina and macula. Lutein's anti-blue light effect can protect eye tissues from damage. In addition, lutein also has antioxidant effects, which can reduce the damage of free radicals to the macula and inhibit inflammatory responses, helping to prevent eye diseases.
Lutein precautions and recommended dosage
Lutein has a cumulative effect. After taking it for a period of time, although the lutein concentration in the blood will increase significantly, the concentration in the macula will not increase immediately. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), adults should consume 6 mg of lutein per day. Lutein is a fat-soluble nutrient and it is recommended to be taken with or after meals for optimal absorption.
Precautions before using Lutein
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women should take the product according to the doctor's instructions.
- People who are currently taking other medications.
- People who are allergic to lutein, other drugs or herbs.
- Have other diseases or health conditions, such as cystic fibrosis.
- Allergic to any substance, such as food, dyes, preservatives or animals, etc.
You should consult a physician or pharmacist before using lutein, especially for individuals who hope to use lutein to reduce the incidence of cataracts or delay macular degeneration. The dosage should vary according to age, physical condition and health conditions.

How to choose lutein supplements
For those who cannot have a balanced diet every day, such as office workers and the elderly with poor eyesight, lutein can be supplemented through nutritional supplements. However, there are so many types on the market, how should we choose?
Free Lutein vs. Esterified Lutein
- *<a href=https://healthynature.tw/%E8%91%89%E9%BB%83%E7%B4%A0%E7%9A%84%E7%94%A8%E9%80%94%E5%8A%9F%E6%95%88>Lutein</a>*Free Lutein**: It can be absorbed immediately without digestion and has a better absorption rate.
- **Esterified lutein**: It needs enzymes to be absorbed, and is less effective for the elderly or those with poor digestive function.
Single vs. combined
Single nutritional supplements only contain lutein and are relatively simple. Compound formulas may add other nutrients such as lutein, anthocyanins or vitamin E. Well-researched compound formulas may actually improve efficacy and absorption rate.
According to the National Institutes of Health, the optimal absorption ratio of lutein to zeaxanthin is 10:2. When choosing, you need to pay attention to whether it is patented, such as FloraGLO® free lutein, ZeaONE® patented free zeaxanthin, etc. Here are some common and effective compound ingredients:
- **Chilean wineberry**: Rich in anthocyanins and delphinidin, it can increase tear secretion and relieve dry eye symptoms.
- **Bilberry**: Rich in anthocyanins, it improves myopia, maintains normal intraocular pressure and enhances night vision.
- **Astaxanthin**: Has antioxidant function, increases blood flow to the retina and choroid, and relieves eye fatigue.
- **Flaxseed Oil**: Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, it is anti-inflammatory and improves the absorption of lutein.
- **Vitamin E**: An important antioxidant nutrient that reduces retinal free radicals, protects the eyes and fights inflammation.
After understanding the characteristics and ingredients of lutein, you can choose products that meet Taiwan's "SGS Safety Inspection Certification" and international quality evaluation to supplement with peace of mind. Lutein supplementation requires persistence and regular supplementation to effectively maintain vision and protect eye health.
